10 Legal Benefits of Marriage

This blog typically speaks of divorce and custody legal issues involved when a marriage fails. But have you ever wondered what the legal benefits of a marriage might be?

10 Legal Benefits of Marriage

  1. Making parental decisions
  2. Joint possession of property
  3. Filing joint tax returns and realizing tax savings
  4. Access to insurance benefits through a spouse’s employer
  5. Receiving family rates for various forms of insurance
  6. Assisting in medical decisions for one’s spouse, particularly when the spouse is incapacitated
  7. Ability to take family leave to care for a spouse during that spouse’s illness, or visiting a spouse in a hospital or other medical facility without restriction
  8. Inheritances without a will
  9. Claiming a marital privilege, i.e. not being forced to testify against one’s spouse
  10. Sharing in spousal benefits through social security and other government programs

While I certainly don't recommend getting married purely for some of the legal reasons above, it's important to realize that there are indeed some legal and social benefits once you do tie the knot.
